Advanced Biomaterials for Spinal Fusion

Introducing PEEK OPTIMA™ HA Enhanced by CA Medical

CA Medical leverages PEEK OPTIMA™ HA Enhanced—an advanced polymer technology developed by Invibio/Victrex—to engineer next-generation spinal implants. With hydroxyapatite (HA) fully integrated into the PEEK matrix, these implants are designed to actively support bone growth, offering a powerful advancement over traditional implant materials.

How It Works

During spinal fusion surgery, the implant is positioned between vertebrae to stabilize the spine and encourage fusion.

Hydroxyapatite (HA), a naturally occurring component of bone, is embedded throughout the implant—not just coated on the surface—promoting consistent bone on-growth.

The radiolucent nature of PEEK allows for precise imaging during recovery, enabling surgeons to monitor healing and fusion over time.

Why It’s Advanced

Z

Osteoconductive Throughout

HA crystals are uniformly dispersed within the PEEK matrix, encouraging bone cells to attach and grow from all angles.
Z

Bone-Mimicking Stiffness

With a modulus similar to cortical bone, the implant reduces stress shielding and lowers the risk of subsidence, unlike stiffer materials like titanium.
Z

Clear Post-Op Imaging

Artifact-free in CT and MRI scans, enabling surgeons to assess fusion progress without interference.
Z

FDA-Cleared and CE-Marked

HA-enhanced devices based on this technology have successfully passed regulatory approval for safe clinical use.

Clinical & Preclinical Evidence

Human Case Series

Solid lumbar and cervical fusion seen at 6 months

Ongoing Studies

Ongoing studies, including those evaluating the CA Medical Lumbar Interbody Fusion Device, continue to confirm the safety and efficacy of PEEK OPTIMA™ HA Enhanced in spinal procedures.

Key Features & Benefits

Hydroxyapatite Integration

Fully integrated HA (not surface coated) enhances bone apposition and early fusion on all implant surfaces.

Osteoconductive Surface

Promotes faster bone on-growth compared to traditional PEEK.

Reduced Subsidence Risk

Lower rates of implant sinking compared to metal cages in cervical fusion studies.

Bone-Like Mechanical Properties

Matches the elasticity of human bone to support natural bone remodeling.

Trusted by Leading Spine Surgeons

“I’m impressed by the solid arthrodesis around the PEEK OPTIMA™ HA Enhanced implant seen as early as 3 months.”

— Dr. Sigurd Berven, UCSF

“I’m routinely seeing evidence of bone bridging and fusion as early as 3 months. I’m fascinated by the cortical-appearing bone surrounding the cage.”
— Dr. Christoph Hofstetter, University of Washington
